The Similarity Report is a flexible document that provides a summary of matching or similar text in submitted work compared against a huge database of Internet sources, journals and previously submitted work, allowing students and instructors to review matches between a submitted work and the database scanned by Turnitin. Staff can then access the Similarity Report through the SpeedGrader. Staff create a Canvas assignment and enable Turnitin by selecting the Plagiarism Review option in the assignment settings. Turnitin is a tool integrated with, and can only be accessed through, the LMS. The Similarity Report can be viewed by students if allowed by the instructor, and can be downloaded and used as part of the information gathered in any potential investigation process. The file is matched against the information available in the Turnitin repository to produce a Similarity Score. Once a student has submitted a file to an assignment with Turnitin enabled, a Similarity Report will be generated according to the settings chosen when the assignment was set up. One of the key benefits of using Turnitin lies in its ability to determine whether work submitted by a student is original, or whether it contains matches to Turnitin’s repository of a wide range of web based materials and other student submissions. Turnitin compares student submissions to billions of pages of content located on the internet and proprietary databases as well as the work of other students whose papers have also been submitted to the system. Clicking the paper title, similarity score, or pencil icon will launch the Feedback Studio to view and grade the paper. What is plagiarism and how can you avoid it? There is currently no service for you to self-check your work without it first being configured by the instructor. The University uses the Turnitin UK Plagiarism. Turnitin is currently only available for you to use if your tutor decides that they will use it in their Blackboard course. Check the submission pledge box to acknowledge that the submission youve just uploaded is your own, original work. If you do so you are wrongly indicating that you have thought of the points yourself.
Your tutor may or may not allow you to view these similarity reports (the tutor decides this on a per-assignment basis). However, turnitin stores all submitted student papers in a database to compare how similar yours is to other papers, so it doesn’t really need to check for such things so long as the text generator service isn’t advanced enough to generate unique text for each user. Once your work has been submitted, the Turnitin service produces a ‘Similarity Report’ which highlights any matches between your work and text found in millions of online articles and webpages. Your tutor can also submit your work to the system themselves should they wish to do so (for instance if you have handed in an electronic copy of your work through some other method)
